UPSC to Overhaul Exam System with Advanced Technology Amid NEET Controversy
In response to the recent NEET scandal and allegations against trainee IAS officer Puja Khedkar, the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has announced a major overhaul of its examination system. The UPSC, which conducts 14 exams annually, including the prestigious Civil Services Examination (CSE), plans to implement advanced technology solutions to prevent cheating, fraud, and impersonation.
A tender floated by the UPSC on June 20 seeks public sector undertakings (PSUs) to provide technology-based security measures. The proposed changes include Aadhar-based fingerprint authentication, facial recognition systems, and extensive CCTV surveillance powered by artificial intelligence (AI). These measures aim to enhance the integrity and transparency of the examination process.
The decision comes in the wake of the National Testing Agency (NTA) facing criticism for lapses in conducting the NEET 2024 exam, leading to a Supreme Court case. Additionally, Puja Khedkar, a trainee IAS officer, allegedly used forged documents to appear for the CSE multiple times, far exceeding the allowed attempts, prompting the UPSC to file a criminal case.
The revamped system will involve biometric verification of candidates using data and images submitted during the online registration process. On exam day, fingerprint scanners and facial recognition devices will be deployed at exam centers to verify candidate identities, preventing impersonation attempts. A real-time attendance monitoring system with GPS coordinates will ensure accurate tracking of candidate attendance.
The UPSC also plans to implement a comprehensive CCTV/video surveillance system with live broadcast capabilities. Cameras will be installed in every classroom, entry and exit gates, and control rooms at exam centers. The footage will be accessible remotely to UPSC's control room for monitoring.
This overhaul aims to safeguard the examination process and restore public trust in the fairness and credibility of UPSC exams.
